Inspired by a wonderful column by Harald Martenstein in the German weekly Zeit about the inability of Berlin administrations, construction and other coprorations to get anything done properly (much less in time), here’s my version of Depeche Mode’s “I just can’t get enough“.
Livin‘ in Berlin you quickly realize:
they just can‘t get it done, they just can’t get it done.
Anything they plan and build and anything they want,
they just can‘t get it done, they just can’t get it done.
They fuck it up and they do it all wrong,
and they just can‘t seem to get things done!
They try to build an airport but it takes a decade longer,
they just can‘t get it done, they just can‘t get it done.
Even when it’s finished the chancellor has no space,
they just can‘t get it done, they just can‘t get it done.
The budget keeps inflating, it’s a hole without a bottom,
and they just can‘t seem to get things done!
Even the main station has holes in its new roof,
they just can‘t get it done, they just can’t get it done.
Subway access at the station was also just “forgotten”,
they just can‘t get itdone, they just can’t get it done.
A ship’s wreck drifts around for years,
and they just can‘t seem to get things done!
Academy of Arts – a brand-new leaky roof,
they just can‘t get it done, they just can’t get it done.
S-Bahn transportation? The breaks did barely work,
They just can‘t get it done, they just can’t get it done.
If it’s in Berlin it will not work,
they just can‘t seem to get things done!
Do I sound slightly frustrated?
Naaaah…..
Funny! But… why can’t I laugh?
you live close enough to TXL (as do I) that you should rejoice in its continued existence
