Free photogrammetry?

Via David Maas’ drip.de I stumbled across something I can hardly believe: the offer of free photogrammetry! You do not even have to have the computing power; it is all online.

The site is My3DScanner.com. I’m checking out their TOS and all that right now, but if what the short intro promises is true, this can be a really neat tool for palaeontology. I couldn’t find any mention of file size limits, and you seem to get full rights – what more can we ask?

updates to follow….

Interesting – I wonder if it would be useful when studying the results of stream table experiments.

I’ve been aware (and somewhat suspicious) of Autodesk’s service for a while now:

They have a full-fledged ImageModeler that you get a license to with other products they offer: http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/pc/index?id=11390028&siteID=123112
They have subscription licensing however, and I’m not a fan.

XSignio also looks like it will be coming into its own…

    Generally – I feel maturation approaching 🙂

  3. TOS sounds pretty good so far. The one thing I was really worried about (will they want commercial rights to my data) reads like this:

My3DScanner does not claim ownership of the Content you edit, upload, post, share, email or otherwise transmit or make available via the Service. […] However, in those instances where you upload, post, share, email or otherwise transmit or make available Content to the Service, you hereby grant My3DScanner a nonexclusive, worldwide, royalty free, non-revocable, sublicensable license to use, copy, distribute, transmit, publicly display, publicly perform, reproduce, edit, translate and reformat such Content solely for the purpose of providing the Service. Other than as permitted or requested by you, however, we will not use, copy, distribute, transmit, publicly display, publicly perform, reproduce, edit, translate or reformat your photos and 3D content. In addition, if you do upload any photos and 3D content to the Service solely for the purpose of editing the photos and 3D content, we will use commercially reasonable efforts to delete the copies of such photos and 3D content stored by the Service within two (2) hours after it is no longer necessary for such photos and 3D content to be stored by the Service.

Yep, I can live with that!
